Do you think the French will be offended by the Statue of Liberty’s destruction in “Cloverfield”?
Because the Statue of Liberty was a gift from the French in 1886 so they could think Americans aren’t showing respect for the statue by destroying it in a popular movie.
It’s like receiving a sweater for your birthday and then a few days you make a home movie in which you destroy it and the gift giver finds out. They would probably be appalled.

it is a movie. they destroyed the white house in Independance Day. they buried the statue in planet of the apes. maybe you are reading too much it.
