Red Pockets on Chinese New?
I have been dating a Taiwanese man (28 y/o) for about a year and a half. I met his parents for the first time about a year ago, and frequently visit his mom. (I am caucasian) I was quite surprised when I went to Chinese New Year yesterday they gave me a red pocket at all, and it contained a significant amount of money ($100). They gave the same gift to their son (my boyfriend). Is this typical practice in this culture, to give a somewhat large gift to son’s girlfriend for Chinese New Year? (We live in the US, California)
Yes, they considered you as family. Therefore, you were given the same amount as were their son. By the way, $100 is not a significant amount to your boyfriend’s parents. So, don’t worry about it. Normal amount to friends will vary from $5 to $100 depending on the relationship.
