Gifts for Gambian children?
I will be travelling to Gambia in January and I was thinking of taking tours around the villages etc. I would like to take gifts for the children of these villages any ideas on what they would appreciate?
Do not take pens, they run out too fast and the families can not afford to buy ink.
Pencils, A4 unlined paper, rulers, rubbers and the best gifts. Education is expensive for a gambian family.
Be careful taking tours unescorted, while no one will ‘attack’ you you will be plagued by children who will even deliberately cut themselves in order to get you to give them money for a doctor (they will nt go the doctor, they will spend the money).
Far better to ask your hotel concierge to arrange a school visit for you where your gifts will be welcome and fairly shared amongst th children.
