As I bridesmaid, how do i confront a bride regarding the expense of her wedding?
I recently returned from being a bridesmaid in a friends wedding in Europe. I had to take five days off work, purchase an $800 ticket abroad, a $400 dress, $700 lodging, $150 shoes, plus various wedding and shower gifts, etc. Once we arrived, little was paid for. As a bridesmaid gift, we recieved something that maybe cost $15 dollars, at most.
My question is — am I being unreasonable for being upset and annoyed with the financial burden this has bestowed upon me? I just assumed that the hotel would be paid for, because i’d already shelled out $1500 for other expenses, but that wasn’t the case. Is it too late to mention something to my friend? Or have I missed the boat completely?

I completely understand where you are coming from. I was the primary MOH/sole bridesmaid in a wedding in France a few years ago. The bride and groom were married in a castle. They told me that they would pay for my nights in the castle. Well, the brides sister was able to attend at the last minute, so now she’s the MOH and I’m a bridesmaid. The bride and groom paid for her flight there and her room and ended up only paying for one night of mine (we were there 3 nights). It cost me a fortune.
What would I have done if I had known how much it was all going to cost? Probably been in it anyway. It was an experience of a lifetime and I got to go and stay at a rented out castle in France, even though it was somewhat expensive for me, the exeprience was worth it in the end.
I too was bitter for awhile as I thought they were covering everything for me, especially since my financial situation wasn’t that great at the time. I expected more from them.
But, it was my own fault for not specifying my financial limits, prior to fully agreeing to be in the wedding. It seemed like alot at the time, but now that I am much more financially secure, it really wasn’t so bad and now I can say I was in a beautiful wedding in a castle in France! The wedding was even published in a bridal magazine.
So, despite how you feel now, I think you should leave it alone. If you confront your friend, you could very well regret it in the future. Strike it up to experience, and just remember the fun that you had in a new place! And, specify your financial limits to friends who want you to be in their bridal party, in the future.
